I had no idea supports fractional scaling, but that on its own sells me on it. Scaling is by far the most annoying thing about using Linux on the desktop because I invariably use high-DPI screens.

@flup it works brilliantly for my use case. I have three monitors all with different sizes and resolutions. I can scale them individually so everything looks roughly the same size on them. Perfectly crisp as well.

Isn't it depends on what compositor is in use?

AFAIK, Wayland requires per-compositor configurations for this kind of lower-layer things, which I consider a fatal design issue of Wayland.

@TomAoki @Edent No idea. This isn’t really my thing; I was just trying to figure out what’s driving the long and torturous drive away from X11.

In my experience across multiple devices and distros - Wayland is brilliant. No screen tearing, fractional scaling which looks flawless, easy config which isn't just random invocations in text files, flawless multiple monitor support, every program seems to work with it.
A real breath of fresh air compared to X11.

@Edent @TomAoki I just had a flashback to hand-calculating monitor timings in the early 90s. This thread has made me excited to try Wayland. Looking forward to the new Mint release in a couple of months.

For anyone using kinda "distros" that comes with "default desktop environment" (curated) and/or having admins other than yourself, it may be true as you don't need (or don't allowed) to configure anything by yourself.

On the other hand, using OS'es that have no default desktop environmen (what to install and configure is fully on admins) like FreeBSD and you're the admin, you need to try and find which compositor fits you. In this case, "lower-level" configuration per compositor is toooo much a pain, thus, fatal. If you want to use such an environment of "freedom", you'll strongly want to configure "common to compositors" "lower-level" things to be configured only once and need to configure per-compositor things only afterwards.

I think this would be the difference between you and me.

I might misunderstand the thread, but X.org can handle different monitors at different scales too.

                I use something like:

                xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --scale %s --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal \
--output eDP-1 --primary --mode 2880x1800--pos %s --rotate normal

@gijs that's exactly the kind of nonsense I don't have to put up with on Wayland. I click on monitors and have a nice GUI to set the resolution, rotation, scale, refresh rate, and position.

Sure! I frobnicated it into a Emacs commands (that counts as a GUI, right) meaning I can stick to i3 a while longer.

Once Debian defaults to Wayland I'll follow, I guess.
