c(ommand) h(elp) point... get it? aka m-x display-local-help
@gijs In my head the mnemonic is that it's like M-. but goes to help instead of definition.
@gijs @ericsfraga the "local help" system in generic, and is genrally used to display hints that modes insert into a buffer using text properties or overlays. With Flymake for example it will print the highlighted warning or error message at point.

Thanks for the "about:translation" feature!
Today we launched https://code.overheid.nl: the NL government-wide code platform 🥳🥳
Code.overheid.nl is a pilot in which we are going to test @forgejo; an open source and sovereign alternative to GitHub/GitLab.
This is an initiative of @BZKopensource, in collaboration with our friends from team DAWO (SSC-ICT), @opensource , @developer , and a number of participating government orgs. 🤝
@tomootes from developer.overheid wrote a nice piece about it: https://developer.overheid.nl/blog/2026/04/24/we-gaan-samen-code-overheid-bouwen
And yes the styling, esp in dark theme, will soon be improved. 😅
@Gina
Congratulations!
As someone who's more familiar with GitLab, how does Forgejo compare to the (open source) GitLab CE?
Edit: found https://forgejo.org/compare/ which partly answers this.
@forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
@developer
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource
@reinouts Forgejo development is not held captive by a US company. Good luck merging a feature that competes with an enterprise offering to Gitlab CE.
@slotos While they're officially headquartered in the US, they have always been a fully remote company with Ukrainian and Dutch founders, IIRC.
I do see that merging enterprise features into CE might not be accepted by GitLab inc., but then again, the EE sales are what keeps development going. It's a double-edged sword.
@reinouts The country of incorporation is what’s important. It dictates how corporation has to act towards its shareholders.
Nationality of the founders is irrelevant here.
Also, I didn’t say „merging enterprise features”, I said „feature that competes with an enterprise offering”. It is a contribution gatekeeping system driven by US legal precedent.

This blog post (in Dutch) describes the considerations that went into the choice for Forgejo:

Super! Lekker bezig!
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer pretty good! congra hope the best for the testing and migration guys
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
Tjeempie!
Proton die werk gaat maken van z'n native linux cliënt en forgejo voor de overheid.
Wat een dag 😃
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer marvellous! Well done everyone 🎉 I'm hoping this will get a lot of traction and I'm certainly willing to do my part within DICTU and DUO 😁
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer Awesome! I wish #Canadians could similarly get their acts together. There is a limp-biscuited, vague policy on sovereignty here, but nothing to speak of really seems to come from it:

@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
It seems to be hosted at Odidio. That's weird.
@Gina, congrats on this great milestone! 🎉 It's awesome that government agencies are thinking about these important initiatives, wish we had a team like yours in our Ministry of digital transformation (Ukraine)... Fingers crossed for your success! 🤩🤞
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer Is Dutch digital sovereignty being protected by Anubis? https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis
@michaelmaguire @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer it should be! We'll look at implementing it.
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
Great. Have they decided how they will be sponsoring @Codeberg yet?
@Gina I’m always cheering for government and the public sector adopting OSS projects like @forgejo!
Do @BZKopensource and other participating organizations contribute (financially and in persondays) to the sustainability of the project?
I mean either hiring the volunteers who work on it, directly contributing to the project, or supporting Forgejo financially
@thibaultamartin @forgejo @BZKopensource We intend to be active contributors. We've already found a fix to something that we'll be upstreaming. I'd like to also check for financial possibilities, but that will come after the pilot this year.
@wsslmn @Gina @wlaatje @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @marlenabcn cool, we'll be having monthly community meets where you can present stuff!
@wsslmn @Gina @wlaatje @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @marlenabcn but I am curious what it is...
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
This is so cool!! I just got my forgejo instance set up and have been loving it. I really hope to see more countries take this initiative!
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
"Overheidsorganisaties ontwikkelen samen ..." and "Uw organisatie aanmelden"
gives the impression that it's meant to foster collaboration among *government* organizations.
Great ofc, but is there or will there be a facility for 'outside' contributors, ie Dutch (or why not, global) citizens to improve upon the code? (IOW: send Pull Request)
@FreePietje @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer ideally yes, although I admit that we still have to work out some of the permission sets, esp while arranging a connection to the gov SSO.
Edit: more detailed answer is that ideally it should be possible to allow external, trusted and verified contributors onto the platform. What would be far more elegant is if federation came to be, so that external people can do PR's from a different Forgejo instance.
@Gina @forgejo @BZKopensource @tomootes @bo @johan @marlenabcn @opensource @developer
That sounds like federation is (indeed) a much better solution.
I was thinking about (what to do with) a (hypothetical) drive-by-patch ... but opening up the platform to (literally) anyone seems 'a bit' out of scope ;-)
Pretty strong negative dynamic #electricity prices for consumers in the #Netherlands this afternoon. After tax.
Up to minus €0.47 per kWh.
We’ve awarded a €180M tender for sovereign cloud to four European providers.
This enables EU institutions, bodies, offices & agencies (Union entities) to procure sovereign cloud services.
Scaling the use of EU cloud is key to strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty.
https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_833
@HennaVirkkunen Oh nice, does that mean we'll soon be able to consult EU laws online without running random #JavaScript from #AWS servers?
@HennaVirkkunen For those who are curious:
„The four awarded providers are European companies: Post Telecom with its partners CleverCloud and OVHcloud, StackIT, Scaleway, and finally Proximus, which partners with S3NS (a joint venture of Thales and Google Cloud), Clarence and Mistral.“
@HennaVirkkunen
Interesting to see #proximus winning this tender partnering with #google (through S3NS), while Proximus only a month ago, announcing AWS as prefered worldwide supplier of cloud-infra and AI.
I'm sure their layers have done expert work shielding their deep Google and Amazon ties from this tender.
Nevertheless this looks a lot like souvereignity-washing to me.
If we want to encourage providers to offer sovereign digital solutions, we must make sovereignty a requirement in our procurement. 💶
The Commission awarded Sovereign Cloud call for tender through which the EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies will be able to procure sovereign cloud services for up to EUR 180 million over a period of 6 years.
And the results are clear – sovereign European solutions exist.
Also cursed.
@Gina so many questions now! But I see this model still has a G-stick, those are becoming rare, and I love them.
@Gina Laptop keyboard design peaked in the mid-2000s with the IBM/Lenovo 7-row keyboard.
With nipple, err trackpoint, designated power/mute/mic/volume buttons, and properly laid out navigation blocks.
It also was pleasant and fast to type on.
Everything since these, including Lenovo products is just increasingly worse.
@Gina
Have the same cursed model and opinion. In my case double cursed, since it is also running Windows 😉
@Gina they've re-invented the Mac Quadra models that put the power switch precisely where you would expect the floppy eject button
@Gina damn, in search of my next lapyop, that's a power key position i couldnt survive either ( i tend to fat finger also )

In the world of international education, training and career mobility, a person's achievements can easily get... lost in translation?
The European Learning Model aims to solve this by creating a universal ‘backbone’ that describes learning in a multilingual format.
A few tools are shared as open source on https://code.europa.eu, to allow reuse and help others to link their own systems.

It's SO REFRESHING to hear Marietje Schaake (former EU MP 🇪🇺) make the case for #digitalsovereignty and #opensource EU-based alternatives NOT JUST to protect European interests and European data, but also to protect human rights in the US and abroad.
